The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, SMMT for short, reports monthly commercial vehicle (CV) transport news on its Transport News Brief every month.
In this month’s edition, Newspress Creative and the SMMT reported that the UK’s one of the safest places to drive in the world, but safety recalls are an often overlooked safety factor for businesses and car owners.
Outstanding safety recalls can be missed when a vehicle transfers between keepers. This can have serious implications: a vehicle with an outstanding recall could see insurance voided and the DVSA has the power to prosecute businesses that sell vehicles to consumers with an outstanding safety recall.
SMMT has been working closely with the DVSA over many years to develop a robust recall system and in 2015 launched a consumer-facing online look-up service to make it easier for individual drivers to check for themselves. Following discussions with industry, the service has been extended to vans, with design changes to better meet commercial needs. This new online tool for fleets allows bulk checking of more than 100,000 vehicles at a time to help them stay legal.
The need for such a tool is clearly demonstrated by the fact that in the first three months of this year alone it was used more than 2.3 million times.
